Northvolt commenced chapter 11 on November 21, 2024 through its voluntary petitionDkt. 1. The filing followed a prolonged liquidity squeeze caused by the capital-intensive ramp of its European battery-manufacturing platform, production delays and quality issues at Northvolt Ett, weaker electric-vehicle demand, customer contract cancellations or renegotiations, and the failure of out-of-court measures to provide a durable funding solution. Northvolt entered court with approximately $30 million of available cash—about one week of operating runway—and the debtor reported approximately $5.841 billion in funded debt across first- and second-lien operating facilities, unsecured obligations and subordinated convertible instruments, as detailed in the first-day declarationDkt. 4.
The initial chapter 11 path was to stabilize operations while seeking a long-term capital partner or strategic transaction. Northvolt secured a $100 million DIP commitment from Scania and access to approximately $145 million of cash collateral, while Rothschild conducted a financing and strategic-partner marketing process and Hilco evaluated asset-sale opportunities under the strategy described in the first-day declarationDkt. 4. That runway did not yield a standalone U.S. reorganization: Northvolt pursued sales of Hydrovolt and its industrial business, then moved into Swedish bankruptcy and obtained dismissal of the U.S. cases. The operative path is therefore liquidation and asset realization under Swedish law, not continued chapter 11 financing or a U.S. plan process.
