City of Detroit, Michigan is a Michigan municipal corporation and the historic center of the U.S. auto industry, responsible for police, fire, emergency medical, public lighting, parks, and other local government services in Detroit. At its 1952 peak the city had about 1.85 million residents and in 1950 built half the world's cars. Through its Detroit Water and Sewerage Department, it also provides water and wastewater service across an eight-county, 1,079-square-mile regional system, while operating roughly 88,000 streetlights, a 1,291-vehicle police fleet, and 35 fire stations.
